Information for Claiming Disaster Relief

Disaster Tax Relief Information

When taxpayers are impacted by a natural disaster, the affected counties may be declared a disaster. This can lead to extensions for tax filing and payment due dates. For current Illinois disaster declarations and due date extensions, please see news releases and informational bulletins.  For federal tax relief information, see Tax relief in disaster situations.

Generally, for income taxes, an automatic six-month extension of time is granted to file your Illinois return. If you receive a federal extension of more than six months, you are automatically granted the same extension for Illinois. It’s important to note that these extensions do not extend the deadline for paying any taxes owed, unless a separate extension for making payments also is provided. See Due Date/Extension to File Income Tax Return.

Taxpayers also have the option to request penalty due to a reasonable cause resulting from a disaster. For instructions, see How do I request a waiver of penalty due to reasonable cause? (illinois.gov).
