Language Services

The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) provides free language services to individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP). IDOR also provides free aids and services to people with disabilities to communicate effectively with the department, such as qualified sign language interpreters.

Visiting an IDOR Office

IDOR staff can assist LEP individuals in person with the help of an in-house interpreter or professional interpreter service. When using a professional interpreter service, IDOR staff will coordinate three-way calls with IDOR staff, the taxpayer, and an interpreter.

Taxpayers are permitted to bring an interpreter to an IDOR office. In this instance, IDOR staff may use an in-house interpreter or professional interpreter service to ensure information is being conveyed clearly and accurately.

Calling IDOR

Written Translation

IDOR can translate documents into languages other than English. Please note that requests for written translation may take two weeks or more to complete.

Other On-Site Language Interpretation Services

To request an interpreter for an IDOR event, employment interview with IDOR, or other related occurrence, please complete and submit Form IDR-969, Interpreter Request. Requests should be made at least four weeks before the services are needed.

 

Sign Language Interpretation

IDOR can provide interpretation services in American Sign Language (ASL) for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. To request interpretation services in ASL for an IDOR event, employment interview with IDOR, or other related occurrence, please complete and submit Form IDR-969, Interpreter Request. Requests should be made at least four weeks before the services are needed.

Text-Based Assistive Devices

IDOR can accept calls from individuals who use auxiliary aids and services for people with hearing impairments, including teletype (TTY) and telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD). Individuals using a TTY can reach IDOR at 1 800-544-5304. Taxpayers may always contact IDOR utilizing the email addresses for specific topics found on IDOR’s Contact Us webpage.

Taxpayers may also use the Illinois Relay Center, a free service available 24 hours a day and seven days a week that allows people who are deaf, hard of hearing, speech-disabled, or deaf-blind to place and receive calls to standard telephone users via a keyboard or assistive device, to contact IDOR.

IDOR webpages can be translated into the six most commonly used languages in Illinois using the language selector found in the header of our webpages. Alternatively, you can also translate our webpages by adjusting your web browser's language setting to the language of your choice. Please follow the instructions provided by your web browser, such as Chrome, Edge, Safari, etc.

If you believe IDOR has failed to provide the services noted above, denied you the benefits of the IDOR Language Access Plan, or discriminated in another way, a grievance can be filed with the IDOR equal employment officer through our Access Complaint Form.

Grievances can also be filed in person at any IDOR office or by contacting IDOR’s EEO Officer/ADA Coordinator using the contact information above.

A written complaint must be filed within six months of the alleged denial. Staff assistance is available if you need help filing a grievance by contacting IDOR’s EEO/AA Officer.
