Summary of Municipal Motor Fuel Tax Rate Changes, Effective January 1, 2024

To: All motor fuel retailers in municipalities where Municipal Motor Fuel Tax has been imposed, effective January 1, 2024

Effective January 1, 2024, certain municipalities have imposed a Municipal Motor Fuel Tax. See FY 2020-21 New Municipal Motor Fuel Tax Allowed to be Imposed by Municipalities Located in Cook County, available on our website at tax.illinois.gov, for additional information.

You must adjust your cash register and any computer program so that beginning on January 1, 2024, you will collect and pay the correct Municipal Motor Fuel Tax rate. You need to contact your software vendor if you use software to create your forms.

To verify your Municipal Motor Fuel Tax rate, go to the MyTax Illinois Tax Rate Finder at mytax.illinois.gov and select rates for January 2024.
