Census and Incorporations

When might you consider requesting a census?

A local government might request a census for either of the following reasons:

  • You are an unincorporated area that has decided to incorporate.
  • You believe that your population has increased since the last census by the United States Bureau of the Census. One frequent reason this occurs is because a local government has annexed a populated portion of land.

Who should you contact in regard to requesting a census?

Write:

Be sure to follow all instructions given to you by any of the offices we recommend that you contact. They may have other requirements or may provide you with additional contacts.

Unincorporated areas that have decided to incorporate should contact both of the following offices:

What role does the Illinois Department of Revenue play when a census occurs?

After a census has been completed, the United States Bureau of the Census will certify the new population figures to the Office of the Secretary of State. The Office of the Secretary of State will certify these figures to the Illinois Department of Revenue. We will update local governments’ population figures and disburse revenue based on the new population figures for the month following certification of these figures. Illinois statutes do not provide for adjustments to previous disbursements.
