Scam Alert: Fake Texts and Websites Impersonating IDOR

Be alert for fraudulent messages or websites attempting to steal your banking information, login credentials, or credit card details. The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) will never request personal or financial information via text message. To confirm official communications or contact details, always visit https://tax.illinois.gov.

How do I report tax fraud or related violations?

Thank you for your interest in reporting tax crimes within the State of Illinois. Tax fraud, including related violations such as the sale and delivery of contraband cigarettes or electronic cigarettes, or misuse of licenses affects us all by providing an unfair advantage to tax cheaters and by creating other harmful effects. There are three different ways you may report this suspected tax crime or related violations:

  1. Fill out the online form to Report Tax Fraud and Related Violations.
  2. Send your complaint in writing to:

  3. Call 1-800-CHEAT-11 (1-800-243-2811). Note: If our agents are unavailable when you call, you may leave a message. If you leave a message and require a response, please leave your contact information including a phone number where we can reach you.

Please Note: Complaints regarding improper claiming of dependents, fraudulent activity by non-Illinois residents or other issues related to the federal income tax return should be reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at 1 800 829-1040 or www.irs.gov
