If my parents claimed me as a dependent on their tax return, can I also claim myself on my return?

If someone claimed you as a dependent on their return for the tax year ending December 31, 2023:

For Line 10a:

  • If your Form IL-1040, Line 9, is greater than $2,425, you cannot claim yourself. You will put zero on Line 10a.
  • If your Form IL-1040, Line 9, is less than or equal to $2,425, you can claim yourself.  You will put "$2,425.00," on Line 10a.

Note: make sure you are marking the appropriate box on Form IL-1040, Step 1, Line C.

For additional information, see the instructions for Form IL-1040.
