What are motor fuel use taxes and IFTA?

Since October 1, 1977, Illinois has imposed a motor fuel use tax on fuel used by interstate commercial motor vehicles. Revenues collected from this tax help, in part, to build and maintain roads and highways.

IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement, a multijurisdictional agreement between the 48 contiguous States and the 10 Canadian Provinces bordering the United States. The purpose of this Agreement is to enable the participating jurisdictions to act cooperatively and provide mutual assistance in the administration and collection of motor fuels use taxes. For more information, see the Motor Fuel Use Tax General Overview webpage and MFUT-53, Illinois International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) Carrier Compliance Manual.
