Why are property taxes increasing?

Why are property taxes increasing?

Your property tax bill is based on two things:

  1. your property's equalized assessed value and
  2. the tax rates, which depend on the level of spending of local taxing districts.

One way to determine why your taxes increased is to compare this year’s tax bill with last year’s tax bill. If the assessed value of your property increased, then you need to contact your chief county assessment officer to find out why your property assessed value increased. If the tax rates shown on your tax bill are higher, contact the county clerk’s office. They can explain why the tax rate increased.
