Withholding Income Tax Changes

Major changes are effective January 1, 2017, for Illinois Withholding Income Tax. The 2017 return (Form IL-941) will require the reporting of payroll dates and withholding amounts. Also, the annual filing and payment frequency has been eliminated.

For additional information, see the following:

We encourage you to check your payment and filing schedule requirements for the 2017 calendar year to ensure you make payments on the correct frequency. All taxpayer’s 2017 required schedules are updated and viewable in MyTax Illinois (see instructions below). In MyTax Illinois, you may also view any letter that has been published for your accounts, file returns, and make payments.

How to check your payment and filing schedule requirements for the 2017 calendar year in MyTax Illinois:

  1. From the My Accounts page, choose your withholding income tax account and check your letters (under the "Requests and Correspondence" tab).
  2. If you did not receive a letter from us during October or November 2016 that informed you of a change to your due date schedule, you can check the frequency following these additional steps.
    1. From the Withholding account page, under “I want to…” choose “Make an IL-501 Payment.”
    2. On the Payment Schedule page, choose any period in the year that you want to know your payment frequency.
    3. On the WIT Payment Schedule page, your Payment frequency will be shown in the center of the page.
