Do I have to activate a My Tax Illinois account to file my Form IL-1040, Individual Income Tax Return?

No. You can file your Individual Income Tax Return easily through MyTax Illinois, without activating a MyTax Illinois account. This is the only method available at this time for individuals who have not already created a MyTax account. Follow these steps:

    1. Go to tax.illinois.gov and click on the MyTax Illinois logo to advance to the MyTax Illinois home screen.
    2. Click the “Start your IL-1040” button.
    3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Note: Make sure to have your IL-PIN number that was assigned to you, a valid Illinois Driver’s License card, or a valid Illinois State Identification Card.
If you already have a MyTax Illinois account, you can login to your account and choose the “File a Return” option.

How do I grant others access to my MyTax Illinois account?

As the primary user (indicated as the “Master” under your web profile), you have two methods for granting others access to your MyTax Illinois account. Important: It is the responsibility of the primary user to allow access and maintain all logons.

    1. Create a secondary username – enables another person to access your account without requiring him/her to set up his/her own primary account. Use the following steps to set up a new secondary user (Caution: See important security information):
      1. Login to your MyTax Illinois account.
      2. Click on “Manage My Web Profile” in the left navigation panel.
      3. Select the “Manage Logons” tab. Note: Make sure that your settings (under “settings” sub-tab) for “new logons allowed” is set to “yes”.
      4. Select the “Logons” sub-tab. On the right side of the page, click on the button labeled “Add Logon”.
      5. Enter the required information (yellow boxes) and uncheck any boxes of tax types for which you do not want to grant access.
      6. Click “Submit” after all fields have been completed. An email will be sent to the email address that was entered providing MyTax Illinois access instructions to the person to whom you granted access.
      7. Repeat Steps a. through f. for as many logons as you wish to allow access. Each individual for whom you want to grant access should have his/her own unique username and password.
    2. Allow third-party access – enables another person to access your account through his/her own MyTax Illinois account**. This is typically used for a tax preparer. (Caution: See important security information)
      1. Login to your MyTax Illinois account.
      2. Click on “Manage My Web Profile” in the left navigation panel.
      3. Select the “Manage Logons” tab. Note: Make sure that your settings (under “Settings” sub-tab) for “Third Party Logons Allowed” is set to “Yes”.

Now, the third-party must use the following steps to complete the access:
      4. Login to his/her MyTax Illinois account.
      5. Click on “Add Access To Another Account” in the left navigation panel.
      6. Enter the required information (all yellow boxes) about the taxpayer account that he/she is trying to access.
      7. Click “Submit” after all fields have been completed. An email will be sent to the third-party user giving him/her MyTax Illinois access instructions.

**If the third party is not registered for one of the taxes currently available in MyTax Illinois, he/she will not be able to create his/her own MyTax Illinois account or have access to yours through the third-party method. If a third party to whom you want to grant access does not have his/her own MyTax Illinois account, he/she still can be granted access through the secondary user method described in this section.

Will I be able to control what secondary or third-party users are allowed to do on the account?

Yes. As primary user, you control the settings for all access to your account. You can choose to allow other users full or limited access to view only your tax account information, or allow them additional access to file returns, make payments, or to file and pay. These settings are all maintained under the “Manage my web profile” hyperlink in the left navigation menu and can be changed by you at any time. You will be responsible for any changes needed to secondary or third-party users’ access.

What happens if my company needs to change the primary user?

The only way to change the primary user is by contacting us. We can reset your company’s primary user on your MyTax Illinois account. For assistance with changing your company’s MyTax Illinois primary user, call us at 217 785-3707.
