File Using Tax-Prep Software
You may choose to file online using computer tax preparation (Tax-Prep)
software. This allows you to file your IL-1040 electronically using
department approved commercial software or web-based applications.
In some instances, the commercial software can be downloaded from
the software company's web site. Some providers of Tax-Prep software
may charge a fee for their service.
To file using this method you and your spouse (if applicable) will need:
- an Illinois Personal Identification Number (IL-PIN) which is located above your names either on the personalized IL-1040 for or the postcard we mail you. If you do not receive a booklet or postcard, and have filed with us within the last two years, you may see in an IL-PIN had been assigned to you,
or
- a valid Illinois drivers license number or Illinois identification number on file with the Illinois Secretary of state.

Eligibility:
You may file using Tax-Prep software if you (and
your spouse, if filing jointly) have an IL-PIN or a valid Illinois drivers license number or Illinois identification number on file with the Illinois Secretary of state.
You may not file electronically using Tax-Prep software
if you:
- are claiming the following subtractions on Schedule M, Other Additions and Subtractions for individuals:
- August 1, 1969, valuation limitation amount from Schedule F (Line 20).
- Enterprise zone, River Edge zone and high impact business dividend subtraction amount from Schedule 1299-C (Line 21).
- are filing a return for a deceased taxpayer,
- want to file a prior year return,
- want to amend or correct a previously filed return,
- claim credit for tax paid to other states on IL-1040 Line 19 other than Missouri, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan or Wisconsin and their local taxing jurisdiction (i.e., city, county) and you are not a full-year Illinois resident,
- claim tax credits from Schedule 1299-C on IL-1040 Line 23, or
- completed Form IL-2210 based on annualized income or you are 65 years of age or older and permanently living in a nursing home.
If you find that you have made an error after filing, you
will need to file a paper IL-1040-X, Amended Individual Income Tax Return.
