Sales & Use Tax TeleFile

TeleFile is a FREE voluntary electronic filing program that allows certain sales and use tax filers the opportunity to file their ST-1, Sales and Use Tax Return, by telephone. TeleFile does the calculations for you, and you will receive a confirmation number when you are finished as proof of filing. TeleFile is also convenient, it is available 24 hours any day of the week.

If you qualify to use this program, the Department will automatically send you a LTR-225, Personal Identification Number (PIN) for Sales Tax Electronic Filing. This letter contains the PIN, the date the PIN can begin to be used, and general information regarding TeleFile and our EFT Program. The PIN is used to grant access to the TeleFile system and as an electronic signature for the return. Taxpayers filing a balance due return may also choose to pay electronically, provided they are already enrolled in our Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) Program for the EFT debit payment option. This provides taxpayers a convenient way to file and pay in one call to a toll-free number we provide.

TeleFile Eligibility:

Generally, you are qualified to receive a PIN and file a return through TeleFile if you meet the following requirements:

  • You are accurately registered to do business from only one site (e.g., a single store or office).
  • Your IBT number, liability period, address, and tax rate pre-printed on Form ST-1 is correct.
  • The only entries you have for your return are for one or more of the following lines: Line A, Lines 1, 2, 4a, 5a, 6a, 7a, 12a, 13a, or 19.

    Note
    :
The Department will continue to mail taxpayers their pre-printed, paper Form ST-1, Sales and Use Tax Return, even if they use TeleFile.

Taxpayers who have questions about Sales Tax TeleFile or about receiving a PIN, may e-mail the Sales Tax TeleFile Office.

Note: Illinois Business Tax (IBT) numbers eventually will be replaced by Account IDs when that tax is included in the new system. At the end of the four-year transition period, use of the term “IBT” will be discontinued.
