The Department of Revenue investigators and auditors have identified widespread underreporting and underpayment of sales tax by gasoline retailers, some so significant that it appears to be fraudulent.
The department and the Illinois attorney general are providing a one-month compliance period during which gasoline retailers can come forward, file amended returns, and pay tax owed. After that period, non-compliant gasoline retailers will be targeted for civil and criminal penalties.
